Ohio River Water Facts:
Water is the most common substance in the world. Water covers about 75% of the Earth; but most of it is not good for drinking. 97% of the Earth's water is salt water. This water is not good for drinking because of the salt and other minerals it contains. 2% of the Earth's water is frozen in glaciers. We could drink this water, if we could melt it. The remaining 1% of the Earth's water is fresh water that we can use!
People in our country get their water from either a surface supply, like lakes and rivers, or ground water, like from a well. In Louisville, we get our water from the Ohio River. Each day, nearly 50 billion gallons of water flows by us down the river. The Louisville Water Company only takes out an average of 127 million gallons each day.
In the United States, almost all cities "clean" or treat their water. In Louisville, the Louisville Water Company takes water from the Ohio river and processes it. It usually take two days to make drinking water. However, depending on where you live, it can take up to a week for the water to be delivered to your house!
Not only does the Ohio River provide our drinking water, it is also a habitat to many fish species. It is reported that the Ohio River maintains 159 species of fish! The city of Louisville is pretty lucky to have such a wonderful natural resource in our backyard!
Now that you know a bit more about what our river has to offer, complete the quiz in this month's issue on page 5 and submit your answer to info@choicelearning.net. Good luck!
